From kick off the girls pressured Basingstoke. We were resolute in defense, waiting patiently and then turned defence into attack quickly, exploiting the space on the wing to break away, only to be brought down metres from the try line. Fabulous support saw Farnham recycle quickly and the forwards arrived with Ellie Brooker at pace driving through the heart of the Basingstoke defense for the opening Try. The first half followed in much the same pattern with strong runs from Basingstoke being met by dogged resistance from Farnham leading to turnovers and breakaways. Darcy Pearce was essential at scrum half pouncing on every opportunity at the breakdown and distributing well to vary the attack. A complete opening half of rugby from the girls saw them take a convincing 7-1 lead into the second half. Only downside of the first period was an knock to Esme Coleman who bossed the troops as ever.
Basingstoke definitely raised their game in the second period recycling the ball better, working in groups and using their power runners effectively. The turnovers in the tackle that forced knockons and interceptions dried up from the first half and Basingstoke opened the scoring. Farnham support at the breakdown slowed and Basingstoke began to win battles at the ruck. The score got closer and a slight readjustment in our mid field saw Scarlet Glover and Ettie Hardcastle cut through the Basingstoke defense combined with destructive carries from Zara Harris, Hattie Gibbon and Grace Chatfield kept us in front but it was going to be close. Summer Simpson, Amelie Moran and Sophie Cook (on debut) made countless essential tackles with Lucie Dawson and Emily Watson strong at the breakdown and in the scrums meant we finished with a confident 10-7 win.
Huge thanks to Evie, Elisa, Emma and Eva who helped Basingstoke out to ensure a full 12-a-side game could be played, just next time don't be quite so good at tackling us :).
