Another fine display on a brutally cold afternoon at Weydon. With the clubs pitches closed due to the wet weather over the past week the U!6 Girls were fortunate to be offered Weydon to get our Rd3 HOB league match played.
Portsmouth, Petersfield and US Portsmouth have formed a massive cluster and were keen to get the fixture played. So when I contacted them informing of the move to Weydon they were made up as they were expecting the call but to call it off... They brought 24 girls from the 3 clubs, warmed up with intent and throughout the match the girls enjoyed played with spirit and endeavour.
Farnham however were a much stronger well organised team which was evident from the outset. With structure, firepower from extremely strong ball carriers, good work at the breakdown, some lovely handling and nimble lines the scoreboard started ticking over. Tries from Zara, Emma, Gracie, Poppy (2), Eva and Ettie H with 3 conversions from Zara and Bea meant a commanding lead into 1/2 time of 41-7. This scoreline gave us the luxury of rotating substitutes at will allowing players to keep warm.
The second half was much more competitive, with Farnham having to work harder for their spoils. And with a combination of the light fading and the northerly wind, everybody was ready for the final whistle. Poppy, Ettie, Zara and Ellie adding to the try count gave us an confident 63-22 victory.
Even at the end of the game all of the Portsmouth, Petersfield & US Portsmouth Girls were jovial and appreciative of the referee and a good run out on a bitterly cold afternoon.
POM voted by P,P&USP: Poppy Filer - Loose Head Prop - Hat-Trick of tries and a lot of tackles.
Coaches mentions: Tilly Odell only her second season but has adapted well and is now a key, versatile player in the backs, and Evie Martin (hooker most of the time but enjoyed a spell on the wing in 2nd half today). Evie often goes about her work under the radar but her tackle count is always one of the highest, her power and ferocity is rarely matched. She is her harshest critic but today showed exactly what she brings to the team.
