Why become a referee? A simple question, but why not.
It may be an injury that prevents you playing anymore.
Perhaps you’ve never played at all.
You might be a parent who wants to be more involved in the game.
You may have watched a game and thought “I could do that”.
To quote the RFU:
“There are many great reasons for becoming a rugby referee:
• You stay involved with the game you love, the friendships and the fun
• You feel good knowing that you’re giving something back
• You stay fit – mentally and physically
• You develop yourself personally and professionally
• You inspire the next generation of players.
How do I start?
At Farnham RUFC, we have a variety of resources to help you on your journey.
The RFU requires a minimum age of 14 prior to attending courses.
(If you are under 14 and still aspire to become a referee, you are still welcome to join YMO training sessions at the club to help prepare you)
You may want to book onto a England Rugby Introduction to Refereeing
Giving you the basics to safely facilitate and manage a game of Rugby Union
The RFU Qualification for refereeing is the England Rugby Refereeing Award a 2 part course completed over the course of a season. After which you are qualified to referee.

Senior games, Men’s and Women’s and U18s Boy’s and Girl’s games are usually appointed by London or Hampshire Referees Society.
Other Youth Games are appointed to within the Club.
Farnham RUFC tries to utilise suitable YMOs to officiate all other Youth games where possible.
